The 24-month incubation programme with the Baltic's first ESA Business Incubation Centre began in Tartu on 1 July.
Triops has been selected by the ESA BIC Estonia Tender Evaluation Board to enter the Baltic's first ESA Business Incubation Centre programme. The selection was confirmed on 9 June 2026. The 24-month incubation programme officially began on 1 July 2026.
What was decided
The Tender Evaluation Board, comprising representatives from ESA, Sparkup Tartu Science Park, Tehnopol, and the Estonian Space Office, reviewed applications from across the European space startup ecosystem. Triops was selected to receive up to €60,000 in equity-free incentive support alongside two years of structured business incubation covering business development, technical guidance, market access, and intellectual property strategy.
The programme runs from 1 July 2026 through June 2028. It is designed to support the commercial hardening of Cadence, Triops's ongoing coordination of the Photrak consortium, foundational work on the sovereign orbital catalogue product on the 2028+ roadmap, and systematic protection of intellectual property across the portfolio.
What ESA BIC Estonia is
For readers unfamiliar with the programme: ESA BIC Estonia is the first ESA Business Incubation Centre in the Baltics, run by Sparkup Tartu Science Park in partnership with Tehnopol, the cities of Tartu and Tallinn, the University of Tartu, TalTech, Tartu Observatory, Kredex, and the Estonian University of Life Sciences. It is one of eighteen ESA BIC centres across Europe.
For a deeptech space company, the ESA BIC network is one of the most credible institutional validation channels for entering the European space market. It sits between early-stage research and serious engagement with ESA, EUSPA, and Member State space agencies as institutional buyers.
What this supports
The programme covers four work streams at Triops over the 24-month period.
Cadence. Programme resources support the commercial hardening of Cadence from private beta toward general availability. This complements the parallel ESA EXPRO+ procurement track for Cadence, which is currently in evaluation, and operates as a distinct scope of work.
Photrak. Programme resources support Triops's coordination role within the EIC Pathfinder Open consortium for Photrak, alongside Laser Zentrum Nord and LC Innoconsult. The instrument development itself sits within the EIC-funded consortium; ESA BIC supports the operational, business, and IPR work around it.
Sovereign orbital catalogue. Foundational research and business development for the sovereign orbital catalogue product, which builds on Photrak's ranging capability and is targeted for market entry from 2028, receives incubation support during the ESA BIC period.
Intellectual property. Systematic development of Triops's intellectual property position across the portfolio, including trademarks, trade secrets, and technical documentation posture.
What comes next
The first weeks of the programme cover kick-off activities including mentor matching, business plan review, and milestone definition against the 24-month timeline. The programme is structured around defined checkpoints between now and June 2028, with continuous engagement between them.
We will use the newsroom to share updates as substantive milestones are reached.
Acknowledgements
We are grateful to Sven Lilla and the team at Sparkup Tartu Science Park for their engagement throughout the application process, and for the operational leadership of the programme.
Acknowledgement is due to the wider ESA BIC Estonia consortium: Sparkup Tartu Science Park, Tehnopol, the cities of Tartu and Tallinn, Tartu Observatory, the University of Tartu, TalTech, Kredex, and the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Thanks also to the Estonian Space Office, and to ESA for the institutional programme itself.
The fact that a programme of this calibre sits in the Baltics is the result of years of ecosystem work. The people who built it did so before we arrived. That is the context we are grateful to join.
Onward
Today marks the start of 24 months of structured work. The pitch was one moment. The incubation is another. The work is the work.
